Birth of modern beekeeping in Nigeria
The 1950,s
Available records show that in the early 1950s, two British beekeepers were brought to Nigeria in order to introduce modern beekeeping.
One was located at Ibadan while the other (C.F. Jessen) was at the then Maigana Farm Service Center in Zaria, currently Maigana Agricultural Development Project (ADP).
In the early 1980s, some scores of agricultural extension workers of the ADP were trained in Beekeeping as part of their Diploma qualifications.
Also in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000 series of beekeeping workshops were conducted.
Despite all these no improvement has been made on the traditional beekeepers practices. They still practiced crude, unscientific and uneconomical methods.
They are also not aware of the presence and importance of six (6) other bee by-products for their use.
